Guwahati, Apr 17, 2013: There are more than 12 lakh households in Assam which have not had access to toilets. Despite the Total Sanitation Campaign, the practice of open defecation continues in the State.
The Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) or Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA) is a community–led total sanitation programme launched by the Government of India in 1999. It is a demand–driven and people–centred sanitation programme. The main goal of the Total Sanitation Campaign is to eradicate the practice of open defecation by 2017.

Guwahati, Feb 27, 2013: The first phase of an awareness programme, ahead of a pilot survey to identify manual scavengers and their dependents, was held at the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Kamrup (Metro) district recently. The pilot survey will take off from the first week of March.
Guwahati, Nov. 11, 2012: Unicef has agreed to help the state in its proposed mission to lower the high level of anaemia among adolescent girls in the state. According to National Family Health Survey report, Assam, along with Andhra Pradesh, has the highest percentage of anaemia in women between 15 and 49.
New Delhi, Oct. 3, 2012: Coming to the aid of the people displaced in recent communal clashes in Assam, European Union has released over Rs 1.4 crore for their immediate needs.
The funds will be utilised for providing hygiene and sanitation facilities as well as clean drinking water to over 45,000 people living in 40 camps in Kokrajhar and Chirang districts, worst hit by the violence, said a statement issued by European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection.

Darjeeling, Aug 21, 2012: A sanitation tax of Rs 10 per day per tourist should be collected through hotels, Gorkhaland Territorial Administration chief executive Bimal Gurung has directed Darjeeling municipality.
The idea is to clean up Darjeeling, said municipality chairman Amar Singh Rai.
"As Darjeeling receives many tourists almost every season, they are also responsible for polluting Darjeeling to some extent," he said.
Guwahati, April 24, 2012: For implementation of the Total Sanitation Campaign in Assam, National Coordinator of New Delhi’s Sulabh International Social Service, Rupal Roy, met Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi yesterday.
Roy briefed the Chief Minister as to how this sanitation programme should be carried on in the State. The Total Sanitation Campaign is a comprehensive programme to ensure sanitation facilities in rural areas with broader goal to eradicate the practice of open defecation.
Guwahati, April 8, 2012: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today launched the ‘Clean School, Clean Guwahati’ campaign at Cotton Collegiate HS School in Guwahati.
As part of this campaign, the three cleanest schools in the city will be rewarded and action will be taken against those schools which perform poorly so far as the cleanliness quotient is concerned. As schools compete with each other to emerge as the cleanest schools in the city, the district administration hopes that this campaign would create environmental awareness among school students.
